Edna Mora Szymanski

The Tenth President of
Minnesota State University Moorhead

President Szymanski was appointed by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system Board of Trustees on April 16, 2008, after a national search. At the time of her appointment, she was senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of Maine, Orono. Before that, she was dean and professor in the College of Education at the University of Maryland-College Park (1999-2006). From 1997 to 1999, she was chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she also served as professor (1993-1999) and associate dean (1993-1997).

At the time of her appointment, Chancellor James H. McCormick said, “Dr. Szymanski brings a wealth of experience from various other universities and a deep-seated enthusiasm for the community. Under her leadership, she will be able to build upon the strong tradition of excellence at this university."

President Szymanski has earned numerous grants for her research and awards for her service. She has produced many peer reviewed articles and book chapters as well as edited books; and she has offered scores of presentations at universities and conferences across the nation.

President Szymanski has served as the chair or in another leadership capacity on several national boards for rehabilitation education and counseling. She also represented the University of Maryland and the University of Wisconsin in state and national organizations.

She was granted a Ph.D. in special education and rehabilitation counseling from the University of Texas at Austin in 1988 and her master’s in rehabilitation counseling from University of Scranton (PA). She attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, receiving her bachelor’s degree in 1972.

President Szymanski began her leadership of MSU Moorhead on July 1, 2008. She succeeded Roland E. Barden, who began his presidency in 1994.
